Causes of Hair Loss around Your Edges

1. You have Traction Alopecia caused by tight Hairstyles

When it comes to Hairstyles, we all strive for that flawless, put-together look. However, it's important to be mindful of the potential risks that come with certain styles, especially if it affects your edges. Traction Alopecia, a common form of Hair Loss, can be caused by tight Hairstyles such as high ponytails, sleek buns, or tightly braided styles. While these Hairstyles may give off a polished and sleek appearance, the constant pulling and tugging on the Hair Follicles can weaken them, making them more prone to breakage.

To protect your edges, it's important to avoid these tight Hairstyles. Opt for looser alternatives that still allow you to express your style without sacrificing the health of your hair. Consider trying loose, low ponytails or buns, gentle braids, or even leaving your hair free. These options will reduce the tension on your Hairline and give your edges a much-needed break.

In addition to choosing looser Hairstyles, be gentle when brushing or combing your hair and avoid pulling too tightly. Use a wide-toothed comb or a brush with soft bristles to detangle your hair without causing unnecessary stress on your edges.

2. You’re making braids on tiny Hair Sections

While it may seem tempting to create braids on tiny Hair Sections for an intricate look, this practice can be detrimental to the health of your edges. The stress and damage caused by this can lead to significant Hair Loss and thinning along the hairline.

When your Hair Sections are too small, the weight of the braids becomes concentrated on a smaller area, putting excessive tension on the edges. This constant pulling and strain can weaken the Hair Follicles, causing them to break and eventually leading to thinning edges.

To protect your edges, it is crucial to choose appropriate Hair Section sizes for braiding. Opt for larger sections that distribute the weight more evenly across your scalp. This reduces the strain on the edges and minimizes the risk of damage and breakage.

3. You’re experiencing Postpartum Shedding

During pregnancy, the body experiences a surge in hormones, which can prolong the hair's growth phase and reduce shedding. However, once your baby is born, hormone levels fluctuate, and the hair enters a resting phase. This leads to increased shedding, and in some cases, it can affect your edges, resulting in thinning or temporary Hair Loss.

The good news is that Postpartum Shedding is typically temporary. As your hormones gradually stabilize, your hair's growth cycle will normalize, and the shedding will subside.

Here are some things you can do while you wait for the shedding to resolve on its own:

  1. Ensure you're maintaining a healthy lifestyle by eating a balanced diet, staying hydrated, and getting enough rest. Proper nutrition and self-care play a crucial role in supporting Hair Growth.
  2. Consider incorporating Scalp Massages into your routine. Gentle massages increase blood circulation to the scalp, stimulating Hair Follicles and promoting growth. Use your fingertips to massage in circular motions, focusing on the areas where you're experiencing shedding or thinning around the edges.
  3. Avoid hairstyles that pull tightly on the hairline and opt for gentle, low-manipulation styles that don't cause additional stress on your edges. Embrace loose braids or twists that protect your hair and allow for optimal regrowth.
  4. Be patient and give yourself time to recover.

Remember that Postpartum Shedding is a temporary phase, and your hair will eventually return to its pre-pregnancy state. We talked more about this in the “Grow Your Edges in Six Months” course.

4. You fail to protect your Edges at Night

When you don’t protect your edges with a satin scarf or bonnet, it can lead to unnecessary friction and moisture loss, which can ultimately result in damage and thinning. Using cotton pillowcases or rough fabrics can create friction as you move your head during sleep. Additionally, these fabrics can absorb moisture from the hair, leaving it dry and prone to breakage.

Make it a habit to incorporate satin protection into your nightly routine. It may take some time to adjust, but the benefits are well worth it. Not only will your edges be shielded from friction and moisture loss, but you'll also notice improved hair health overall.

If you find it challenging to keep your scarf or bonnet in place throughout the night, consider using a satin pillowcase.

5. You make Ghana Weaving

Ghana Weaving is undeniably a stunning Hairstyle, but the potential for permanent damage it poses simply isn't worth the risk. The tight braiding technique involved can exert excessive tension on your edges, leading to Traction Alopecia, irreversible damage, and permanent loss of your precious edges.

While the allure of this style may be tempting, it's essential to prioritize the long-term health of your hair. To safeguard the health of your edges, you must part ways with this Hairstyle forever

Fortunately, there are numerous alternative Hairstyles that not only protect the edges but also promote healthy Hair Growth. Opt for low-manipulation styles such as loose braids, twists, or protective updos. These styles allow your hair to breathe and minimize the tension on your edges while still providing versatility and elegance.

To sum up, we've explored five common causes of Hair Loss around the edges, ranging from tight hairstyles to Postpartum Shedding and failure to protect your edges. If you're exhausted from battling with Traction Alopecia and the frustrations of sparse, receding, or nonexistent edges, it's time to discover a comprehensive solution.
