Are you tired of dealing with a flaky, itchy, or irritated scalp? You're not alone! I have seen and encountered people suffering from scalp issues from time to time. So, rest assured, I've got you covered. When it comes to hair care, most people focus on just getting their hair braided, applying all kinds of products, and wearing a wig—basically, just making their hair look good or pleasant to people. But what about the scalp? The scalp is the foundation of healthy hair, yet it’s often overlooked. With over 10 years of experience in trichology and scalp health, I am dedicated to helping clients achieve optimal scalp and hair wellness. My passion for understanding the science of the scalp over the years has led me to specialize in diagnosing and treating a wide range of scalp conditions, from dandruff and dryness to more complex issues like hair thinning and scalp psoriasis.
Here Are 3 Common Scalp Care Mistakes You’re Probably Making (And How to Fix Them)
Scalp issues can be so frustrating, embarrassing, and painful, and I understand how it feels to go through all of these. Have you been experiencing dryness or discomfort in your scalp lately? I guess you must have been wondering what the cause may be and how you can get relief. Here are three common scalp care mistakes that could be affecting the health of your hair—along with simple tips to avoid them.
1. Making the mistake of over-washing the scalp
A common misconception most of the clients with this issue had was that washing your scalp regularly keeps it cleaner and healthier. No, it doesn't help! What so many people are yet to understand is that washing the scalp too frequently depletes it of its natural oils, resulting in dryness, irritation, and even an overproduction of sebum as the scalp tries to compensate for the lack of moisture. Take one of my client for instance, who washed her hair every day because she believed it would help with her oily scalp. Instead, she noticed her scalp growing more greasy, with dry patches and itching. She enrolled in our flagship course out of frustration and learned a lot about the causes of scalp disorders and infections. I advised her to change her washing routine to every three days with a sulfate-free shampoo, which eliminated oiliness and dryness within a few weeks. Practical Tip: Wash your scalp 2-3 times a week. If your scalp is oily, you may want to wash it more frequently, but you should avoid washing it every day unless it's absolutely necessary. Opt for a mild, sulfate-free shampoo that cleanses without stripping essential oils. Use a clarifying shampoo once a month to get rid of buildup.
2. Making the mistake of neglecting scalp moisture
Many people focus primarily on moisturizing their hair, ignoring the scalp. Just like crops need well-hydrated soil to thrive, your hair needs a well-moisturized scalp to grow strong and healthy. When you skip moisturizing your scalp, it can become dry and flaky, leading to itchiness and even hair loss. Some even avoid putting conditioner on their scalp because they believe it will make their hair greasy. One of my existing students referred a client to me. This client was dealing with severe dandruff and an itchy scalp. She avoided conditioner and scalp treatments, thinking they would make her scalp oilier. I introduced her to a routine of using a lightweight, scalp-specific conditioner and a weekly moisturizing scalp mask. Within a month, her dandruff had significantly decreased, and her scalp was much healthier. Practical Tip: After shampooing, apply a lightweight conditioner or scalp moisturizer directly to the scalp. Look for products containing aloe vera or hyaluronic acid. Also, use a weekly scalp mask or treatment. Tea tree oil and peppermint-infused products can be helpful to control dandruff while also providing moisture.
3. Making the mistake of using harsh chemicals and excessive heat
Regular use of harsh chemicals such as dyes, relaxers, and perms, as well as exposure to excessive heat from styling products, can cause significant scalp damage. We all love a good blowout, but using heat-styling tools too frequently or wearing tight hairstyles can stress your scalp. This can cause inflammation and even hair loss over time. Give your scalp a break by opting for looser styles and limiting heat use. One of my clients had been using chemical relaxers and frequently straightened her hair with a flat iron. She began noticing thinning in certain areas of her scalp. When she came to me and narrated her struggles, I decided to switch her to a less aggressive hair care routine, including less frequent chemical treatments and using heat protectants with lower heat settings. Over time, her hair density improved, and the thinning areas began to fill in. She was so excited to have her scalp's health restored. Practical Tip: Switch to gentle, organic cleansers that nourish your scalp without stripping it of its natural moisture. Consider having these treatments performed by a hair specialist to reduce the possibility of damage. Also, before making use of any hot tools, always spray them with a heat protectant. Keep the heat settings moderate and avoid making direct contact with the scalp. Whenever possible, air-dry your hair or use a cool setting on your hair dryer.
